This book is a sequel to "If I Never Get
Back" and is just as
clever, exciting and fun. An added plus is that there aren't too
many
references to scenes of the first book. It doesn't its partner
in crime, to be a good read.
This time our hero returns to 1876. This time he's ready.
He
has both a purpose and a plan. He wants to start his life with
his
friends from the past. He is now in the past and he wants to
stay there
with his newfound love, the widow Cate.
But his journey takes a few detours. He is robbed and has to
ride the rails with a tramp to seek out old friends to learn where he
needs to go. He meets famous people, has enough dangers to fill a
book,
meets lovely ladies, and unites with his lost love. One catch:
She's not so fond of him anymore. This will change.
Again, Darryl Brock has done his homework in history. The
accounts of Sam Fowler are accurate. Considering that part of
the fun is reading about life in America in the 1880's, the
first person account is a wonderful companion to the historical ride.
His history is not that
of a textbook.
"Two in the Field" is an adventure in the past. It is
a love
story as well as a travelogue. There is some likeness to
"If I Never Get
Back" and this adds to the adventure rather than spoiling it.
To read both books is enriching, however each can stand on their own.
If you have a taste for adventure, romance and American history, this
is the type of reading you will love. "Two in the
Field" is another fun read.
