DVD Review | Sting of the Black Scorpion
Written by: JP

Film Rating: C

You take a sci-fi cable TV series and re-cut it for a movie.  Then, sell it later as video and DVD.  The real fans will love ya for it.  That is what you have with "Sting of the Black Scorpio."  There are three episodes and the movie is 84 minutes.  But viewers see it as one big show.

If you are in love with special effects, action shots and the super hero genre, you will love this movie.  You have automatic weapons fire three minutes into the film.  There are so many car crashes, I lose count of the number.  The explosions are good.  It is a nice action film.

Black Scorpion is a cop in her normal job and becomes Black Scorpion to fight evil.  She has the usual hero stuff.  Skimpy costume, secret hideaway, high tech car, non-lethal weapon, martial arts training, and a cool looking mask.  In this film she fights cool bad guys with the usual bad-guy stuff. Dark costume, impressive technology, witty lines said while fighting, and a fiendish idea to threaten an entire city.  The city is City of Angels, and even has streets named Seraphim and Cherubim.  The film uses images of Los Angeles, California.  Much like Batman's Gothem looks like New York.

If you like comic book heroes, you will like this movie.  Frank Gorshin plays Clockwise, a villain with an odd gang who have a special car. A Studebaker! His gang includes Big Hand, Little Hand and a female accomplice named Hourglass. (She wears an hourglass around her neck.)  Gorshin played the Riddler in the old Batman series.  In the film, Black Scorpion also fights bad guys named Flashpoint and Firearm.

The movie is rated R for brief nudity. I did not see any nudity.  There is also a photo on the back jacket that is not in the movie.  There is also a trailer on the DVD.  It also has scenes not seen in the movie.  I cannot find evidence that this movie ever made it to the big screen.

This movie is basically three TV action shows in a row.  It is action entertainment.  Some could call it mindless fun.  There are at least four videos of the Black Scorpion series released.
