Exclusive Interview | Smile. DK
Written by: Kage Alan

My introduction to Smile.dk’s music began several years ago on the evening I arrived in Hong Kong for my first real vacation abroad since 1988.  The song that captivated me and continues to do so was “Butterfly” and I soon found myself browsing the shelves of the local HMV music stores trying to find a full CD by the enigmatic group.  I discovered one and while I craved more, it wasn’t until two years later that I found their sophomore effort, “Future Girls”, while shopping in Japan.  It was incredible!

Of all the music reviews I’ve written, Smile.dk has by far received the most attention and from fans around the world.  When you think about it, that’s quite a feat for a Swedish group whose CDs are released primarily in Japan, China and Hong Kong.  Avid fans of their music wrote to me asking what I knew about singers Veronica and Malin, which was very little.  It has only been through the gracious time and effort of Christian Villum of Smile.dk’s management (as well as e-mail from producer Robert Uhlmann) that details of their new album have come forward and I was able to send the girls a few questions that they would answer for our readers.

So, here at long last, is Smile.dk!

Kage Alan: I understand you are working on a new album. Congratulations! Can you tell us anything about it?

Smile.dk: Yes, thank you! We’ve been working for a year with our new album Golden Sky and it’s finally finished. It’s a great Smile album – We think it’s the best so far.

We’ve continued with our typical, happy Smile sound, and added a touch of new influences.

KA: Are you having any more creative input with this latest album? By that I mean are you writing any of the songs or having more control over what songs you choose for it?

S.dk: On this new album we chose to work with two new production teams –Dream World and Hartmann & Langhoff.  The main part of the album is still produced by Robert Uhlmann.

The album includes three of our own songs and the first single, Domo Domo, is one of them!!! The song is special because we wrote the chorus in Japanese!

The rest of the songs that we chose went straight to our hearts. They have this perfect mixture of oriental and Scandinavian pop, and we just love it!

KA: Will you be touring after the new album comes out? If so, do you have an idea where? A huge number of fans from around the world would love to see you!

S.dk: Yes of course we will! Actually we are traveling to China tomorrow (November 19th 2002) to be part of a big event in NanNing. In December we release the new album in Japan and Hong Kong, and of course we’ll be there to promote it as well. We’re really looking forward to seeing all of our fans again.

KA: What are each of your musical backgrounds and how did you become a part of Smile.dk?

S.dk: We both have been singing and dancing since we were kids. As we were growing up, we went to different kinds of musical/dance schools and met in one of them.

After our education, we both worked in many different music projects. When Nina (Veronica’s singing partner on Smile.dk’s first album —Editor’s note) decided to go solo, we found the opportunity to work together again as Smile.dk.

KA: Many people have also asked about your videos. Is there a chance that a DVD will one day be a project you work on?

S.dk: We really hope so!

KA: How do you connect with your fans, and will there be a way in the future for your fans to contact you?

S.dk: Our new homepage will be finished by the release of the new album, Golden Sky. The URL will be www.smile-dk.com

We are very sorry for the delay of our homepage, but we hope we can make it up to our fans somehow...

KA: Is there anything that you would like your fans to know about you as people and also as recording artists?

S.dk: We still live in Sweden and we just can’t get enough of chocolate, cookies and ice cream!!!

We really look forward to the release and of course seeing all of our fans again.

Thank you so much for keeping up the great website www.modamag.com. We hope you find this useful and we would really like to see you in the States someday.

Hugs & Kisses

Veronica and Malin, Smile.dk.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to Christian Villum for being so patient with my e-mail inquiries and for acting as liaison between myself and Veronica and Malin.  It almost goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway, thank you Veronica and Malin for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer us.  From myself all of our readers, we wish you a successful album and tour and hope to see you around the world!
