DVD Review | Sex and the City (Season 6.1)
Written by: Kage Alan

As if it wasn’t bad enough having to contend with this being the final season of “Sex and the City” and no movie to look forward to anytime soon, HBO split the season up into two separate releases.  Grr…  Well, at least I’ll have one more thing to look forward to before it all ends.  And I don’t want it to end.  Carrie having published a book and becoming an author has me relating to the show in a whole new way.  Of course, I don’t flounder around like she does with the dating scene.  I have my man.

Let’s see…where did we leave off?  Big (Chris Noth) left for California and Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) was dating Berger (Ron Livingston).  All is not happy in the Big Apple, however.  Why?  Mostly because Berger starts acting like a stereotypical straight male with issues.  Will it last?  Only time will tell, but if not, there are always other men to see.  Charlotte’s (Kristin Davis) gentleman, Harry (Evan Handler), wants to set her (Carrie) up with a friend of his who makes love like a jackrabbit.  If that fails, there’s always an extremely well-respected Russian artist (Mikhail Baryshnikov).  Charlotte, meanwhile, wants to keep Harry around for the long-term, only to do that, she might just have to convert to a different religion.

And, speaking of issues, there’s Miranda (Cynthia Nixon).  Will having a steamy affair with the new tenant in her building (Blair Underwood) help her forget that she’s still in love with Steve (David Eigenberg)?  Yeah, I’m not so sure either.  Trouble at work also plagues the life of this single mother.  That leaves Samantha (Kim Cattrall), sexy diva that she is.  After having such an awful time actually falling in love with Richard (James Remar) and being cheated on, the last thing she expects is to fall for hot, young waiter/actor wannabe Jerry Jerrod (Jason Lewis).  This guy isn’t happy just being a one-night stand and gives Samantha a run for her affection.

Where the show is going and how it will finish remains to be seen, but this first half of Season 6 doesn’t have a single blah episode in the bunch.  Each one has its share of tender moments and absolute hilarity.  Whether debating if noisy children belong in an upper class restaurant, who has the right to say how much a pair of shoes should cost or the art of teabagging, this first half of Season 6 will have you rolling and rooting for a happy ending for all…or at least the beginnings of one.

HBO has released “Sex and the City (Season 6 Part 1)” in their original Full Screen ratio.  Video and audio quality are solid here, so no complaints.  Extras this time around include no fewer than 4 audio commentaries, which tend to be fairly decent considering no cast members were included, and the 30-minute “Museum of TV and Radio’s Seminar Series.”  While the cast and creator of the show do an outstanding job answering questions about the show, the moderator is one of the absolute worst I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching.  The participants and audience deserve better.

Truth be told, no matter how much fun the show has been, how long can a good thing go on before it starts to lose its edge?  “Sex and the City” has had a terrific run and is quitting while it’s still on top.  Six years is a nice, ripe long time to share in the lives of these women and like they’ve done in many of their relationships, perhaps its time we all move on and savor the past while looking forward to the future.  Well, not quite yet.  We still have to discover how it all turns out.
