Sans Soucie!

Katherine Soucie's line, Sans Soucie (translated from French means ‘without a care’), is made entirely out of nylon hosiery! Now, we realize that this sounds awfully strange - but it certainly doesn't look it! And one may worry about potential ‘runs,’ however after being hand dyed, deconstructed, and silk-screened, the original material is no longer recognizable – in fact, it can even be machine washed.  The images chosen by Soucie are influenced by music, nature, textile history, and even the molecular structure of fiber and her focus is on producing garments that represent the individual.

Soucie began creating outfits from vintage garments and fabrics at an early age. From deconstructing to reconstructing each garment, this introduced her into the world of fashion.  Originally from St. Thomas Ontario, she went on to study fashion design in London and Toronto, Ontario but soon became discouraged by the lack of unique fabrics and materials that were available.  This frustration led her to leave design school and inspired her to start designing and creating new fabrics.

Upon graduation from Textile Arts, Capilano College, North Vancouver, Canada she received two awards (North Vancouver Arts Council Award for outstanding achievement in a Visual Arts program and Circle Craft Co-operative Scholarship for creative and academic achievement) which set her on her way.  Katherine Soucie has also been interviewed for local, national and international media  and was even featured on television and film.  Her line, Sans Soucie, has a growing loyal following and is available in stores across Canada and the US, ranging from BC, to Portland to New York in scope of reach.

“I feel that due to the mass production of garments and textiles today that we need to rediscover or reinvent already existing materials in order to maintain a sense of awareness, appreciation, and most importantly our individuality,” says Soucie.

Check out her designs online at: www.sanssoucie.ca - Pieces range in price from $20-$595.

And remember: Wonderful things come in all shapes, sizes -- and fabrics.

FACEatelier

FACEatelier (www.faceatelier.com) is a makeup line for women who are not about gimmicky designs by Jessica Simpson or Hillary Duff, but rather about a top quality product that comes in sleek minimalist, yet elegant packaging.  Because, as Debbie would say, “looking beautiful and being the best that you can be, is the best revenge.”   Debbie Bondar, the 50-year-old mastermind behind it all is a recently divorced woman on a mission "hence the Revenge line" who decided to make a new high end full color line with no silly gimmicks. Instead she focused on transforming the way cosmetics are sold. The critics said that you could never sell makeup online because you could not touch or feel it, but Debbie proved them all wrong by deifying traditional cosmetic marketing as FACEatelier's original counter was an international website. By marketing to the mature women Debbie realized her market was not only well versed in cosmetics but knew exactly what they wanted. So a year later FACEatelier is doing great and has been getting recognition from major Hollywood Stars and models like Cameron Diaz (who has a whole whack of FACEatelier products).

From a shaky marriage to taking on cosmetics giants -
Sometimes great things really do come in small packages.

NOTE: FACEatelier's lip glosses and eyeshadows  are  especially to die-for.  The quality truly speaks for itself much better than just some "hook" that all cosmetics seem to need to have in order to sell these days.  The hook is simply the caliber of product.  That's all you need. Really.

Flawless Tanning Made Easy...

Think getting a flawless tan is impossible? Think again.

The Flawless Sunless Tanning System ensures that your wish for a perfect tan is granted.  The system consists of a pre-tan exfoliator, tanning lotion, extender (to keep your tan going and going) and a black light wand.  When you apply the lotion, all you have to do is wave the wand across your body to see if you've missed a spot or applied too much anywhere.  Yes, that's the secret to the flawless tan.

Not sure if the tan these products help achieve was flawless, but it sure looked nice -- even and very natural. The only problem is that it's hard to figure out when you applied enough lotion or too much as there is no guide.  But the countless hours of fun that are to be had with the black light wand more than make up for it!

PATINA...

An interesting thought: Back in the old days (you know, like 40 years ago?) one way of telling one’s wealth came from “Patina.” If you were ‘old money,’ your fancy leather shoes would gracefully age. Whereas if you were ‘new money,’ those same shoes would be shiny, untouched by time. But nowadays with trends changing every New York minute, how can we tell? It is surely a sad time for America.

You can check out PATINA, an accessory company that we've previously featured in Modamag to get started on your own patina signature style; your very own "weathered, worn or distressed" piece of personalized art.
